BassLayerz presents...

grooverider black edit

GROOVERIDER (Prototype/Radio 1)

Grooverider is one of the biggest and most respected Drum & Bass producers and DJs on the scene, with his legendary radio shows with longtime companion Fabio (for BBC Radio 1 & Kiss FM) helping to spread the gospel of drum'n'bass worldwide.

Following a few years of Djing at illegal raves in the late '80s, Grooverider took up a residency at the now legendary London clubnight 'Rage' in 1991, where he personally oversaw dance music's evolution from acid house to techno to Jungle to D&B. The sounds played by Grooverider at Rage became the blueprint for Drum & Bass, with many of the scene's biggest names gaining their inspiration at the clubnight.

His show on BBC Radio 1 (presented in conjunction with Fabio) ran from 1998 until 2012, attracting a devout audience worldwide. Although Grooverider is known primarily as a DJ and radio presenter, he is also a recording artist and record label boss.

Despite it's sporadic releases, Grooverider's label Prototype is regarded as one of D&B's best imprints, releasing the likes of Drumsound & Bassline Smith, Dillinja, Ed Rush & Optical, Photek and DJ Fresh's 'Bad Company'.
As a producer Grooverider released his major label LP 'Mysteries Of Funk' back in '98, and also produced remixes for the likes of Roni Size Reprazent, Adam F, 808 State, The Freestylers, Goldie, Herbie Hancock & The Stone Roses.

DJ SS (Formation)

Much like Grooverider, SS is one of the very select DJ & producers who has been there right from the start. Born and bred in Leicester, DJ SS progressed onto the 'rave scene' and was one of the first on the worldwide scene to DJ his own produced tracks. His label 'Formation' has seen releases from the likes of Nero, The Prototypes, Distorted Minds, Twisted Individual and John B.

DJ-SS is now celebrating 20 years of Formation records, and 10 years of World of Drum & Bass which is a phenomenal achievement in any music genre.

NICKY BLACKMARKET (Blackmarket Records)

Nicky Blackmarket is one of the original pioneers of drum and bass, and he is still the most faithful soldier for the scene around the world, running his own record shop in London, the legendary Blackmarket Records.

As the jungle scene exploded Nicky formed his legendary partnership with the late Stevie Hyper D. These performances are still regarded as the standard by which all others are judged, and mp3s of those sets will probably be on the internet forever. Blackmarket Records supported the scene as a focus for the community, an essential component in an world without the internet.

Unlike many superstars, Nicky still works in his shop and is a promoter of fresh talent and ideas, unafraid to help new artists and organisers push the art form forward. His love of drum and bass keeps him from descending into the mindless repetition and lazy performances characteristic of many in the scene.

The world's fastest rapper, Jamaican-born Daddy Freddy was also one of the first artists to fuse ragga and dancehall with hip-hop, helping establish a style that would become highly influential from the '90s to the present day.

The "lyrical dappa" Shabba D is a name which has become legendary amongst the livelier, more dancefloor orientated D&B scene.
